I'm going to see Leonard Cohen the week after my birthday! I got a floor ticket! WHEE!!!!!!!
As I said earlier, this is a birthday present to myself, and actually, given how verklempt I am already, it's probably for the best that I'm going alone. ;) I think it's reasonable to say I'm a lifelong fan, since my middle name is a result of my mum's love of a certain song by the great man. And if mum were still here, I'd take her with me, esp. since it's so close to Mother's Day... but come to think of it, I'll be taking her with me anyway. :)

My guitar teacher finds the craziest stuff. One of many reasons I like the guy, of course. Herewith, the kazookeylele!
You've never heard The Final Countdown like this before.
Cover of The Darkness' I Believe In A Thing Called Love.
There's more. It's just... sublime, in a ridiculous way. Well done, lads.

Check out Jacob Moon's acoustic cover of Subdivisions -- from the roof of the Staircase Theatre in Hamilton. He's using a JamMan, hence the one-man band effect (of which I'm terribly fond/envious). Nifty cover, great voice.

There's tons of rare/old/odd U2 on YouTube. It's partly due to the extra tracks on various re-released album sets, but there's also old video showing up... I suspect people are digging out VHS/Betamax tapes from the Bacardi box where they've been gathering dust for a decade or three, and finally converting them. Not that I would know anything about that, ahaha.

Check out Kevin Fox's cover of Army Dreamers. He's cute, he plays the cello, and he covers Kate Bush and Eurythmics. I might have to buy his stuff. :)
On this page, a techno cover of The Boys In The Bright White Sports Car. It's like my childhood and my teenage years collided. I'm somewhere between bemused and smitten.
And then there's this: Take It Easy On Me, an Aha + Commodores mashup. Morten has been slowed down a tad to match the laziness of Easy. Completely bizarre.
All via the Anti-Hit List.

I love a capella. Esp. if it's of something that wasn't previously performed as such (c.f. The Flying Pickets covering the Yaz song, Only You). Thanks to the Anti-Hit List, I found this bit of genius (careful with the volume, seems they've got a lot of powerhouse sopranos in there):
Come On Eileen, as performed by The Muhlenberg Dynamics.

Impostor Syndrome: A feeling shared by most people I know. Well, at least there's a name for it... that's something, right?
On the plus side, there's always chocolate (I got dark chocolate almonds at the bulk store today -- that, and a couple of vodka-and-Oranginas, and I'm feeling less achey and spacey).
Desperately Seeking Susan... on stage... with Blondie doing the music. W.T.F?
And speaking of music, ( some videos, behind the cut... )

When Elvis died, I was seven years old, and I knew it was a big deal but I didn't get why. See, the Elvis I was vaguely aware of as a child was Vegas Elvis, with all the attendant spangly excess. Let's just say the appeal was kind of lost on me, given my frame of reference. I think I caught my first glimpse (and IIRC, it was just a still) of 68 Comeback Special Elvis when I was fifteen (around the time one of my friends started getting me into anything that was older than us, on principle). It made a bit more sense, after that. ;)
The Comeback Special DVD (which I've borrowed) has all the extras, outtakes, stuff that was cut due to objections from the primary sponsor (bordello!)... Yeah, I reeeaaaally get it now.
There's nothing like a fine lookin' man with a wicked sense of humour and a helluva lot of talent -- wearing a black leather biker outfit and bondagey wrist cuffs (and SUCH lovely hands). HELLO. I'll take half a dozen, please, and don't bother waiting up.

I cannot wait to see this. But no Streets?!?!?! *cries* Damn. I desperately wanted to see that song done in 3D. (Maybe it'll be an extra on the DVD. But still...)
"Later this year" can't get here soon enough. This is the first movie I've wanted to see in the theatres in a long, LONG time.

Lead guitar, bass, drums, mic. Like Guitar Hero, but WAY cooler.
All right, folks -- who's in?

It was a good year, I had a hard time choosing -- Joni, Jimi, Janis, Iggy, Pink Floyd, CCR, Elvis, Lightfoot, Black Sabbath, Santana... I went with The Beatles with Let It Be, and Leonard with the song that gave me my middle name. Paul looks either half-baked or fighting a head cold, and Leonard looks hella shaggy (ah, hippies...), but still. ( Lovely stuff. )
And apropos of nothing, I woke up this morning feeling mighty fine. Tired, sure, and not looking forward to the various things I gotta do, short and long-term. But I feel spring coming. I think the bunny feels it, too. It's not something I can explain. It's got nothing to do with the weather, or the date. Soon, though. Really soon. *bounces*

Recently, Alex stumbled across the following video on YouTube. I forwarded the link to John Sakamoto at the Star (he of the always nifty Anti-Hit List), because this is something of a mashup -- but I guess he wasn't as impressed by it, so I'm posting.
I don't know whether to call this a bizarre coincidence or serendipity or totally effed up. It's not a perfect match, but it's fascinating to watch. Carole Pope's raunchy lyrics and rasping voice take the video's already present objectification and turn it into something with which my semotics and media profs would have had a field day. I'm not up for the kind of queer feminist analysis this wants to inspire, but I'm sure several folks on my flist will take up the cause... May or may not be work safe, between the lyrics and the whole short skirt schoolgirl thing.

Power was down on the streetcar lines, took forever to get to work, but hey, President's Day south of the border, which means that our American offices are closed. It's hopefully going to be a nice, quiet day.
