So, thanks to recent recs on my flist (*bows to lydia_petze and certain communities*), I started reading ST:Reboot fic. It seems to have had an effect, because today I decided -- having been a fan of various incarnations of the franchise since like, 1975 -- to do something I rarely ever do: I went to a matinee, alone. Figured I should actually, you know, see the movie.

OMG it was AWESOME. I loved it.

...except for the oh god scary monsters. I had my hands over my eyes for Pike's torture scene. GAAAAH. Major squick, there. And tried not to directly look at the screen through the whole Delta Vega pursuit. But anyway.

Dear Leonard Nimoy: I LOVE YOU SO SO MUCH. *squishes*

Dear Karl Urban: I love you in a totally different way. *censored*

Ho-ly shit, SPOCK'S MOM. I DIDN'T REALIZE UNTIL THE CREDITS. OH MY GAWD. *flails rather a lot*

I want more Gaila. ("Don't we all?!" /groucho)

SCOTTY! Oh I love Scotty so much. I always loved Scotty, and now... EEE. (But the sidekick's gotta go.)

I loved the little tribute moments -- not just lines and catchphrases, but looks and moves and such -- and the fact that most of them were subtle enough that they were a surprise (like, *beat* *snort* "yeah, that's Kirk all right..."). Back when I first saw the trailer, I feared (as one might expect) that it would suck, because there were so many ways that it could suck, right? And that was one of them, and it didn't, so yay!

Where can I get me some starship salt and pepper shakers?

SABOTAGE! :D :D :D

Anyway. In short: MORE PLEASE. Will watch again soonish if possible.

Meantime, there is fic. Oh baby, is there ever. Mmm. Shiny new fandom with stuff I grok already inside, whee! See, this is why canon authors should embrace fan fic: free promotion! Recruiting more fans who will go out and (literally) buy into the franchise! What's not to like? If you've made something good that people love, they will (for the most part) take care of it, play with it, and make it grow. Possibly in ways you might not like, sure, but... your world remains its own world. Fic writers (artists, vidders) just take the characters/world on different journeys, in different directions... alternate timelines... :D

Lost job = need to sell a lot of stuff. Lists behind the cuts (no photos because this list is too long already, but if you need 'em, let me know). Note: the gaming list is massive. Crossposting to toronto. More to come...

Vibra acoustic dreadnought guitar, 27 years old and hardly ever played. New light strings, nice tone and in great condition. My guitar teacher assures me it's a good guitar -- it's just the wrong guitar for me. Comes with fully lined hard case in excellent condition. $150 together, or will consider selling guitar and case separately.

<strike>Yamaha electronic keyboard with stand. Good condition, but no manual (I bought it secondhand, not sure of its age). Tons of instrument options, rhythms, effects, etc. and a sustain pedal. $50</strike>

Vintage Ludwig Vistalite 14"x10" rack tom. Pattern F, vertical stripes, black and white (rare colour/pattern combo), made in the 70s (has the older, pointier blue/olive badge), and I think the heads are original. The chrome's got some pitting and it could do with a shine with plastic cleaner, but otherwise it's in good condition. $150

<strike>Vintage Ludwig Supraphonic 8"?x15" snare drum. Date stamp and badge code indicate it was made in 1967. Missing the wires and the resonant (bottom) rim/head and screws, but the shell and the top rim are in very good shape (pretty sure the batter head is original). Obviously it needs work, but when complete it'll be awesome. $150 (a bargain, considering what complete ones go for at vintage resellers).</strike>

<strike>Droopy: The Complete Theatrical Collection, 2 DVDs, $15
Woody Woodpecker & Friends Classic Cartoon Collection Vol. 1: 3 DVDs, $20
Edith Piaf, Mon Legionnaire (CD in a nice round tin) $2</strike>

Spycraft 1st Edition - If so, I'm taking my wish list down and not buying there anymore. This is inexcusable, IMO.

ETA: Yes, some items on Amazon.ca have been affected. Right then. Screw you, Amazon. *removes wish list*

ETA2: And, for the record, what my profile now says:

You'll notice my (6 page, 150-item long) wish list has been entirely deleted (by me). Until Amazon stops deleting sales rankings from queer-positive and sex-positive books (Google "Amazon rank" for more info), I refuse to give them my business. I recommend shopping at your local brick-and-mortar queer-positive bookstore instead. E-mail me if you want suggestions as to where and what to buy. But please don't buy me or my family anything from here until Amazon ends censorship.

So nice to laugh and feel hope at the inauguration of a U.S. president. Michelle's totally going to give him the gears about tripping over the oath -- she was trying not to crack up, there. Rick Warren wasn't a dick, interestingly enough; I was looking to see if anyone turned their back on him, but no. Rev. Lowery was a hoot, Aretha was classically Aretha (the hat, whoa), Elizabeth Alexander was interesting, Simple Gifts was lovely.

Dear President Obama:

I may be up here in Canada, but you have my plowshare. Is it zombie time again? *eyes LJ frame*

Also, what's with the authorization at the bottom?

ETA: Aaaaaand now it's back to normal. The frame was the Undeadjournal one, and there was a section below the body text box with a checkbox to authorize third parties to use your content. Maybe they're just messing around? It is stupid o'clock in the morning, after all...

This guy is exactly why The Handmaid's Tale should be mandatory reading. He is completely missing the point: in fact, in missing the point, I think he highlights it. (The comments are largely reassuring, too, that we've come a long way since, say, the 80s -- see past posts about my own experience being in high school while the local bluenoses tried to ban books.)

For the record, I'm not a fan of Atwood's work. This book in particular has always scared the crap out of me (forget run-of-the-mill horror: my nightmares are about living in such a dystopia). And that is precisely why I think it's important. Especially now.

ETA: Antonia and I are in agreement, as is often the case.

I like the sentiment. More joy is always a good idea, and the phrase reminds me of the Ani DiFranco EP, More Joy, Less Shame, which contains several versions of Joyful Girl.

I'm also fond of the more recent Present/Infant, as I can relate to it rather a lot:

so I'm beginning to see some problems
with the ongoing work of my mind
and I've got myself a new mantra
it says: "don't forget to have a good time"
don't let the sellers of stuff power enough
to rob you of your grace
love is all over the place

there's nothing wrong with your face
love is all over the place

I'm off to play with my kid.
